TikTok's Chinese parent ByteDance plans to develop an AI model trained primarily with chips from compatriot Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL), said three people familiar with the matter, as U.S. curbs turn the social media giant homeward in search of chips.

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, is reportedly training its AI on chips developed and built by Huawei Technologies. Both Chinese companies could be trying to build regional AI capabilities and counter US trade restrictions.

ByteDance may be planning to move towards Huawei’s Ascend 910B AI chips for its AI models amidst US sanctions and chip shortage.
