T-Mobile Will Use SpaceX's Starlink for Emergency Alerts, SMS Texting During Hurricane Milton
T-Mobile and SpaceX got emergency approval from the Federal Communications Commission this past weekend to use the latter's Starlink service to send emergency alerts to those affected by Hurricane Helene in areas where cell service remains down.

The approval allows SpaceX to use radio frequencies leased from T-Mobile to provide what's called "Supplemental Coverage from Space" beamed from Starlink's low-Earth orbit satellite constellation.

"SpaceX and TMobile have been given emergency special temporary authority by the FCC to enable Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability to provide coverage for cell phones in the affected areas of Hurricane Helene," said SpaceX on X, on October 6.
