YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Cameroon's 91-year-old president, Paul Biya, returned to the country on Monday after a 42-day absence that had sparked questions about his health and whereabouts.

In 1982 Biya capitalised on the anti-corruption sentiment that had been directed at the Amadou Ahidjo regime. Biya promised an anti-corruption “new deal”. Despite initial progress, by the early 1990s Cameroon was topping the world’s corruption tables.

The expected return of Cameroon’s president Paul Biya to Yaoundé has not occurred. Financial markets are reacting to growing concerns about his health, while several key government figures have been called to Geneva.
